A Voice Acting Dilemma

Posted by Gerkinman - October 11th, 2008

Once upon a time, cartoons had characters, now these characters of course had voices and the voices are what made them who they were, indeed, the voices are what brought them to life. But the cartoon characters themselves where always the stars.

Fast forward many a decade to our current time. Every time a new animated feature comes out who are the focus? Is it the characters? Ha ha, the characters arent important, no its the actors voicing the characters that are the stars. Thats not to say that most actors don't do a good job, but more so that the characters themselves are really just shells, nobody cares about the characters anymore, its all about the celebrity behind it.

This seems to be a trend thats followed threw to here. Now all you need to do for a cartoon to be considered good is to get another popular animator to put their voice into it, make sure you plaster there name all over everything and hey bingo, you got yourself a good movie. Better yet, to be a good voice actor all you need to do is make a funny voice. Emphasis, subtle character traits, personality? Pffft, thats not what makes a character come to life, nah, just give em a funny voice and you got yourself a winner. Bonus points for screaming and talking jibberish. After all, the characters dont matter, its the voice actor behind it thats the real star of the show.

Ofcourse this is all merely my opinion, and personally, i think the only good voice actor on this site is David Firth, with each character being a complete individual with tonnes of little details in the personality and voice delivery that everyone else here lacks, not to mention his reoccurring characters are always consistent. Tho i know alot of people here will argue the point because of the lack of diversity in his accents. Or maybe its just the fact his characters dont sound like anime dubbing which is the most i can say for most of the other "voice actors" here. Not that theres anything wrong with that, but not everything needs to sound like that.

So heres the fun part, what do other people here think.

Also here is me as a pirate, because im cool like that.

I wish I was a pirate

Who doesnt.

I also wish I was a pirate

Yarg, no eye patch matie!

It blew off on the high seas, yargh

I really agree what you say about David Firth. Me and my friend were talking about voice actors on newgrounds a while back now, we both agreed that hes one of the best on the site and don't reckon he gets the respect he deserves as a voice actor.

When I say zoom zoom, you go voom voom.

when i say voom voom, you go zoom zoom

What about Rina-Chan and Egoraptor?
They're pretty good voice actors as well.

They sound more like anime dubbing then classical voice acting, thus far. IMHO.

Andy Dennis is a very good voice actor I think. In fact, I think we have plenty of great voice actors, but we never notice them because, GASP they're good and instead of bringing attention to themselves and their voices they get into character and disappear.

I find alot of the best voice actors end up being the animator's themselves who just know who these characters are and can naturally say the things that need to be said without trying to make everyone go LOLROFL DAT VOICE WAS FUNNY!

That's what I think.

I find your crazy, real voice actors brag about how great they are and announce there awesomeness to the world. >=C

I agree. there is so much favoritism to voice actors, sure they know two shits about animation yet are more popular than many animators themselves!!!

I have noticed this shift myself.

Tomamoto is an AMAZING voice actor...when you let him be.
He has a beautifully gruff voice, but everyone seems to be using him for the wrong things.

Sir, your reply was quite absurd!

Can you not grasp the concept of zoom zoom and voom voom?

Apparently not :(

honestly, i didnt read your post cuz its too long 4 mua.
but assumming from the title its about voice actors (duh..?)

i have a real issue with that, i mean....dont we all have voice? well, at least most of us..why is it that whenever an animator needs to do voice "acting" (if it can be called that) thay go to some stranger (wich is always the same guy) to SPEAK FOR THEM. Just freaking express yourself, dont be embarrassed by your high-pitched skwiggly diggly piggly voice.

i dont know where im going here and i dont know what i just said. It's late, im drunk, she's fat, its on.

More cushion for the pushin?

ugh, you plebian. Brad5987243058 is the best voice actor on this site. i still get chills when he says "oh yes i am!!!"

I am a great voice actor

Just to let you know!

And knowing is half the battle.

Australian pirates? That just might work! Have to say thats a good point, some non-anime type voice acting, even western cartoon style voice acting at least would make a novel change.

I certainly agree about the anime dubbing bit. Sometimes I think I'd rather hear Microsoft Sam than another annoying anime styled voice. A lot of decent voice actors get misused that way.

One of the things that bugs me about Egoraptor is that he can flawlessly imitate so many voices but he only has 2 or 3 of his own. Though, if you get him to act in your movie it's scoring at least 3.5 even if it's garbage.

It's true what your saying here but sometimes you just need a screaming idoit to play a character LOL!!!!

When the character is a screaming idiot sure.

Do you think Tomamoto would play a good giant angry viking? Or a caffeine charged idiot?

Pirates FTL.Ninjas FTW.L2P

lol, anyway,as per the topic at hand, yeah, nobody really wants new Voice actors anymore, but all you really have to do is join the voice acting alliance

I shot the sheriff,but i didn't shoot the deputy

That can't be Gerkinman. Where's his crazy green hair?
